Neighbors,
I wanted to share a brief update on recent City Commission activity and what we’ve been working on to support our community.
At last week’s Commission meeting, I took time to thank School Board Member Rebecca Thompson for her leadership and hard work during the school redefining process. These discussions are challenging, and it’s important to recognize collaborative efforts that keep students and families at the center of decision-making.
Advocating and uplifting our students, faculty, and dedicated community members of our schools is a priority for me. Whether it's my kids or your kids, I understand how vital it is to prioritize our schools here in the District.
Affordability continues to be a top priority. In late January, I met with Century Village Condominium Presidents to share more good news for residents of the New Hampton K, L, M, N, O, and P buildings. Thanks to ongoing work by our city engineers in coordination with FEMA, these buildings have been removed from a high-risk flood zone — a change that should lower insurance costs and bring real savings to unit owners. This work will continue throughout 2026.
The Commission has also taken meaningful action to support residents by approving funding for senior services at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center, investing in roof replacements at school and municipal facilities, and advancing drainage improvements to reduce flooding in the Chapel Trail community.
Finally, as this month is Black History Month, I wanted to share a community event featuring music, culture, and fellowship on February 25th, 2026 at 11am. See the flyer for the event here.
Thank you for staying engaged and for the opportunity to serve you.
Sincerely,
– Mike Hernández
